Transitioning from a grab for knowledge to reflecting on knowledge

July 25, 2016

For many years a was in a sort of land grab. But it wasn’t land that I was gobbling up, it was knowledge. I wanted to have as many check-marks on my resume as possible: I’ve mastered this, this, and this.

Recently there has been a shift. I no longer feel the need to gobble up knowledge. Time to slow down and smell the flowers. It’s time to reflect on what I’ve learned. I want to sit in awe of the big ideas, I want to be immersed in their profundity. I want to see how it all fits together.

I am transitioning from technology to philosophy. I think it’s a good progression.

The teleprompter is the enemy of authenticity

July 23, 2016

Excellent insight by Mike Rowe (creator of the TV show, It’s a Dirty Job):

Whatever you think of him, Donald Trump is not in Cleveland tonight because he’s richer, smarter, meaner, shrewder, or more ambitious than any other contender. He’s there, in my opinion, because talking without the aid of a teleprompter made his opponents look like performers in some ridiculous charade, waiting for someone else’s carefully crafted words to appear before them on a magical screen, so they can speak while pretending not to read. The teleprompter is an insult to thinking people. It’s also the enemy of authenticity, and if I were King of the World, I’d melt them all down and have the residue molded into a giant Trojan Horse.

The world is not here to make you happy

July 20, 2016

A beautiful message from Eckhart Tolle (author of The Power of Now):

No longer demand that a particular condition should make you happy. By “condition” I mean a situation, a place, or a human being. We make demands such as, “He should do this to make me happy” or “She should do that to make me happy” or “This place is not good enough, it’s not making me happy” or “This situation that I just went into should make me happy but it’s not”. People, places, and situations are not there to make you happy; they are there to wake you up. The world is not here to make you happy. Conditions are here to be transcended internally so that internally you go beyond dependency on external conditions. Transcend means to be aware of the timeless dimension of who you are.

Free of the endless stream of thoughts and wants and desires

July 16, 2016

A beautiful description by Eckhart Tolle:

Some people are only home—in this moment—when they are getting tired and the noise machine in their head is too tired to produce more thoughts. You are half way towards sleep and for the first time that day it feels good to be alive. You are longing for the complete annihilation of self in deep sleep. Get away from the self, get away from the noise machine with its continuous stuff-producing machine: you need this, you want this, more stuff. And then you sleep. If you’re lucky you sleep all night long but probably the noise machine wakes you up at 3 o’clock in the morning and starts working. You remember all your problems and the great heaviness descends upon you. In bed there is no problem but the mind doesn’t know that. Then the body responds with an emotion. The body doesn’t realize that your thoughts are just thoughts. The body responds to thought as if thought were reality. So when you are thinking about your problems and how very challenging they are, your body reacts as though you are in a crisis situation at 3 o’clock in the morning in bed. For many humans the only way they can be free of the noise machine is when they move toward unconsciousness.
